I think if you’re going to ask students to learn and use reading strategies, it’s only fair to try out the strategies yourself. My little experiment this week was to use self-monitoring strategies while reading a Korean book.
The book I chose is one where I understand maybe 80-90% of the language, but I still have lots to learn for full understanding. The strategy I used was self-monitoring. At the end of each page or two, I would ask myself to summarize, including the following parts:
Who?
What?
When?
Where?
in the target language.
To no one’s surprise, this helped my comprehension. If I found that I could not summarize the page easily, I would re-read until I was able to do so. I made sure that I didn’t just read the words but understand what I read.
I’d definitely try other strategies in the future! It was fun.
