Newspaper Zine Project

This activity can be used to practice:

  • Identifying main ideas in nonfiction text
  • Handwriting
  • Recognizing the parts of a newspaper
  • Summarizing and paraphrasing

Miniatures are adorable. Therefore, a way to make newspapers more approachable for children is to condense them down to the most basic elements.

For this project, we use an 8.5×11 inch paper divided into 8 pages. You would fold along the dotted lines and then cut into the middle section to create a mini zine; instructions found here.

At the local library (or online), find news articles from a local source and an international source. For the entertainment section, the child can write about what they have recently read, watched, or listened to.

The child should rewrite the article they choose, picking out key words and writing neatly. They can also draw a picture.

The document below can be used for ideas on how to format the zine or printed and filled out.
